Timex Watches
The Timex Corporation is one of the world's best known mass producers of watches. The company has its roots back in the mid 19th century although the Timex name was only introduced relatively recently.History
The company started life as the "Waterbury Clock" company in 1854. A sister company, "Waterbury Watch" produced pocket watches. In the early twentieth century Waterbury began to produce wristwatches. At the beginning of the 20th century Waterbury - in conjunction with Robert Ingersoll - sold the famous Yankee pocket watch. This was built to a price - you could buy one for a dollar. Over twenty years some 40 million were sold.
In 1950 the company - by then renamed the US Time Company - produced the first Timex wristwatch. This was engineered to be as reliable as possible - the slogan was "It takes a licking but keeps on ticking". The Timex was a great success and the company was renamed the Timex Corporation then later the Timex Group. It is estimated that Timex has sold over one billion watches.
Mickey Mouse
One of the most famous Timex models was the iconic Mickey Mouse clock. Timex produced the first Mickey Mouse clock officially licenced from Disney in 1933.Today
The Timex Corporation today has its US headquarters in Middlesbury, Connecticut - almost next door to where the story began in Waterbury. It also employs thousands of people worldwide in many different countries.Timex today concentrates on digital watches (although it still produces many analogue models) and has a large range on the market. Many of the Timex watches you can buy include their patented Indiglo night light technology. One of the most popula of the Indiglo watches is the Expedition range.
Many Timex products are blurring the boundary between wristwatch and computer; you can buy Timex heart rate monitors as well as watch/calculators and the Iron Man Data Link which interfaces with a PC. The Triathlon uses GPS technology to measure how far you have travelled and is designed for sporting activities such as jogging and rowing.
