Suunto Wristwatches
The Suunto product range is an excellent example of the evolution of the wrist watch from a simple time-keeper to a multi-functional digital computer. The company is probably best known for their range of Dive Computers such as the Cobra/Cobra2, Gekko and Vyper/Vyper2, however you can also buy Suunto watches aimed at many other activities. These include features such as heart rate monitors, altimeters, barometers and GPS systems. The company defines its core competency as measurement.History
Suunto didn't begin life as a wrist watch company, the measurement of time came later. The company began in 1936 when Tuomas Vohlonen invented the first liquid filled compass that could be of practical individual use. Liquid filled compasses are considered more stable and hence reliable than the "dry" type - the liquid reduces pivot friction and dampens vibrations. Although popularly known for their dive-watches, Suunto today remains a major player in field of compasses and similar equipment, the Suunto M-5 compass being popular with NATO forces.Suunto built on the foundation of the liquid compass and in the 1970s launched its first dedicated instruments for divers which included depth measurement. As technology improved, so did Suunto watches and their feature range expanded to include water pressure, temperature, etc. In the 1990s Suunto introduced the Suunto Vector, which was designed for land based use and included features such as altitude and direction.
