Poljot Watches
The First Moscow Watch Factory
Until ten or fifteen years ago, Poljot watches were little known outside of the USSR (later the Russian Federation). The company's selling point was "Swiss quality at Russian prices". Although you can still buy Poljot watches in Russia, the name is today more associated with watch movements which are used by other manufacturers. The Poljot factory was established in 1927 in order to allow the USSR to provide quality watches for its military. The First Moscow Watch Factory was founded on the existing Duber Hampton watch factory and the new factory began output in 1930.
Within ten years almost three million watches had been produced and they were frequently to be found on the wrists of Red Army officers. Since many of the early Poljot watches were intended for the military, relatively few were available for ordinary people to buy.
The First Watch in Space
As a state company, the First Moscow Watch Factory was obviously associated closely with the prestigious Russian space programme. In 1957 the Sputnik model was produced, an item that is popular with collectors. The first watch bearing the trade name Poljot was produced in 1960. In 1961 cosmonaut Yuriy Gagarin made the world's first manned space flight wearing a Poljot Shturmanskie ("Navigator") watch, a feat for which the company is probably best known.
Astronauts and cosmonauts from a variety of nations wore Poljot watches into space over the next two decades. In 1976 Poljot began production of the 3133 chronograph model that - along with V.V.Polyakov - set a space flight duration record.
