Patek Philippe
The Swiss Patek Philippe (PP) watch making company is recognised as one of the most exclusive, high quality brands available to buy on the market. Note that there's one 'l' and two 'p's in the name - a common misspelling is Phillipe, as well as the the variations Philipe and Phillippe.History
The company actually began as "Patek, Czapek & co" in 1939. It was formed as a partnership between Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek and initially produced high quality pocket watches.Patek and Czapek parted company in 1844. A year later, in 1845, Patek met up with French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe and the two went into business together. Initially the company was called Patek & co. In 1851 Jean Philippe became a full partner in the business which was renamed "Patek Philippe & co". It was Philippe who in 1868 invented the first wristwatch.
The new company quickly became one of the most highly respected watchmakers, numbering even royalty amongst their clients. Over the years they produced a number of spectacular watches which are much sought after by collectors.
During the depression of the 1930s, the market for luxury wrist watches collapsed and Patek Philippe suffered accordingly. The company was sold to the Stern family who continue to run it as a family business today.
Nautilus
Perhaps the best known of Patek Philippe's many deigns is the Nautilus range. This was named to reflect the source of the design's inspiration, a ship's porthole. The collection was "launched" in 1976 with the steel 3700/1. A modern Nautilus collection is available to buy today.Ultimate
Perhaps the most significant achievement of the Patek Philippe company was their creation in 1989 of the Patek Philippe Calibre 89 - the ultimate watch. This site is not associated with or endorsed
