Movado Watches
Movado is today a watchmaking group that consists of the original Movado company along with others. Although now part of the larger group, the Movado brand name still maintains its reputation and popularity.
History
The luxury Swiss watchmaker Movado began life in 1881, the name Movado first being used in 1905. WHat does the word "movado" mean? It was chosen because it is the Esperanto for "always in motion". As well as technical quality and patented movements the companhy is known for its elegant wristwatch designs. Today Movado's strapline is "The art of design".Highlights of the company's history include the Polyplan (1912), the (analogue) Movado Digital (1930) and the Calendomatic (1946), However the company's most famous watch design is probably the "Museum", a beautifully simple single dot dial created by Nathan George Horwitt in 1947. The iconic dot motif has been used in Movado designs ever since, in particular the 1981 Imperiale/Sports Edition.
Collections
There are a number of Movado wristwatch collections available to buy today, several of whih continue the classical single dot concept. Perhaps the most modern and striking of these is the Bold collection which combines a white strap and TR90 case with a single coloured dot and matching hands. At the opposite end of the design spectrum is the Movado Artists' series. This features watches with bold, colourful designs specially commissioned from leading artists. At the time of writing the series features the light-hearted designs of US artist Kenny Scharf.
In common with most modern watch companies Movado has a number of celebrity "ambassadors". At the time of writing these are actresses Kerry Washington and Amanda Seyfried, sportsman Derek Jeter and musician Wynton Marsalis.
Movado ESQ
In 1992 Movado - under the name North American Watch Company - launched its Esquire range of watches in the US, the name later being shortened to ESQ.For those who prefer a multi-functional sports watch the ESQ collection includes the Beacon with its airplane logo and the Bracer with protected crown. The Kali is a sleeker watch for women which has either round or rectangular case and is also available with diamond accents.
