The Movado Group

You might not have heard of the Movado group but you've undoubtedly heard of and probably bought some of its brands. Some of the best known names include Tommy Hilfiger, Movado ESQ, Ebel, and Hugo Boss.

It also sells watches under the Coach and Concord as well as its own Movado brand name. One of its best known designs is the "Museum" style: a black face with a single point at 12 o'clock.

History

The original Movado company was formed in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim in La Chaux-des-Fonds, Switzerland. The name movado means "always in motion" in the artificial international language Esperanto.

Today, the Movado company has become a group and is a leading global manufacturer, retailer and distributor of watches from pure fashion to the luxury end of the market. Whilst you can buy a Tommy Hilfiger watch for under $100, or buy an ESQ Swiss watch for under $500, an Ebel could to set you back over $10,000! That degree of diversification gives the Movado Group considerable flexibility.

The group's manufacturing centre is in Switzerland, its corporate headquarters are in New Jersey USA and Bienne Switzerland. It employs some 1400 people worldwide.

Movado has close connections with the arts in various forms. The group is a major sponsor of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In 1999 the Movado TimeSculpture, a bronze clock tower designed by Philip Johnson, was erected at the Center.
