The Timex Indiglo
Indiglo® is Timex's registered trademark for their patented illumination technology. Although most well known for its use in the Timex Indiglo watches it has also also been possible to buy other equipment such as personal organisers that are lit using this technique.
What Is Indiglo?
Indiglo is a technology for providing uniform back lighting to a watch face or other device. It does this without drawing much energy.
How Does Indiglo Work?
Unlike traditional illumination methods, with Indiglo the watch face is not illuminated externally. Instead, when the button is pressed, the face itself lights up with a blue-green glow.Indiglo technology utilises a phenomenon called electroluminescence. This term refers to materials emitting light when subjected to an electric current. In an Indiglo watch, the face is made up of a number of layers of special material. When the backlight button is pressed, an electric current is passed across the layers resulting in the release of light from the phosphor layer. In effect the entire watch face glows to make it readable at night time or in low visibility conditions.
Flix
Some of the recent Indiglo watches incorporate an easy activation system called Flix. Once the watch has been place into Night Mode the Indiglo display can be activated briefly by a sharp flick of the wrist without the need to press any further buttons.
Since their 1988 patent Timex have released many Indiglo Night-Light watches and today you can buy them
in a huge variety of styles.
