The TAG Heuer Monaco V4 Revolution

Concept Chronograph

The Monaco V4 Revolution is a concept watch from TAG Heuer that was unveiled in 2004. From idea to finished item took around 20 months of elapsed time for the team.

Outwardly the design is inspired by their classic square-cased "Monaco" worn by Steve McQueen. Inwardly it resembles... well, almost nothing that has gone before. TAG Heuer have always liked to innovate and the V4 Revolution is certainly no exception!

The V4 Revolution changes a number of the basic features of the wristwatch. Most remarkably, the pinion and gear system has been replaced by a belt mechanism to provide a unique transmission chain. These can be seen by the wearer due to the watch's semi-skeleton design with synthetic sapphire panels front and back.

The idea behind the belt system came from Swiss watchmaker Jean Francois Ruchonnet who worked with TAG Heuer on the V4 Revolution. The belt mechanism has a number of advantages over the traditional gears: A belt can transfer power over any distance rather than requiring a chain of gears. In addition it is more flexible and shock resistant.

The V4 Revolution has two other main technical innovations. One is replacing the traditional jewels by 39 ceramic micro ball-races, cutting down on the need for lubrication and hence maintenance. The other is the use of a linear "shuttle" weight for self-winding purposes.

Overall the Monaco V4 Revolution is one of those grand leaps that take your breath away. As they used to say in the old films: "It's a crazy idea, but maybe just crazy enough to work".

In 2005 the V4 Revolution was awarded the prestigious Red Dot Design Award.
