Rolex Perpetual Watches
Along with Oyster, the word Perpetual is one of those most associated with the Rolex watch brand. As with Oyster, the name Perpetual refers not to a single model of watch but to a class.
What Is A Rolex Perpetual?
The name Perpetual refers to the Rolex range of auotomatic, self-winding watches. Today we take this feature for granted on non-quartz watches, however it's less than a hundred years old. Rolex introduced the "rotor" mechanism in 1931, which is extremely recent in horological terms. The Rotor is essentially a semi-circular metal plate that moves round inside the watch as the wearer's wrist moves naturally throughout the day. This internal movement is then used to provide effectively gravity powered winding. The simple yet clever system went on to become standard in self-winding watches with Rolex marketing it under the name Perpetual.
Today you can still buy Perpetual watches - one of the ranges in the current Rolex colletion is the Perpetual Oyster. These include modern versions of the Perpetual Datejust first introduced in 1945. The Perpetual self-winding mechanism also features in many of the other Rolex watches you can buy today such as Submariner and Yachtmaster II models.
