Citizen Nighthawk
The Nighthawk is one of the most best known watches made by Citizen. Although designated a "pilot's watch" it is, of course, also bought by collectors and those who just love a good watch with lots of features. What Is The Nighthawk Watch?
The Nighthawk is a large, deep watch - chunky is probably the best word - in order to accomodate all the markings required for the various features. According to the reviews some people find these markings and dials give the watch a wonderful technical look, others find that it seems cluttered.Features
One of the most obvious of the Nighthawk's features is the "pilot's slide rule". A slide rule, for my younger readers, was a simple mechanical device that allowed approximate calculations to be performed rapidly. In the case of a pilot this could be used for quickly calculating fuel requirements. Obviously today a digital calculator would be quicker and more accurate - but a mechnical backup might be useful in the event of problems. Today the average buyer of a Nighthawk is more likely to use the sliderule feature for other purposes than aviation or simply admire it as a clever gadget. There are different models of Nighthawk available to buy in different countries with localisation of design, for instance dial and caseback. At the time of writing there are two Nighthawks available to buy in the US range: the BJ7000-52E and the BJ7005-59E with a cool black strap.
Other features of the two Nighthawks include solar power via Citizen's Eco-Drive mechanism, luminous markings and dual time indicators. Also - perhaps worryingly for a pilot's watch - water resistance to 200m! Other models of Nighthawk in other countries have different features, for instance some of the European models (so-called Euro-Nighthawks) have radio controlled time setting. Always check before you buy.
