What Is The Navitimer?
History
The History of the Navitimer begins in 1942 with the launch by Breitling of the Chronomat. This was a wristwatch chronograph which incorporated a circular slide rule. This allowed pilots to perform a variety of calculations easily and conveniently. The Chronomat was instantly popular with pilots and Breitling expanded the concept. The circular slide-rule was branded a "navigation computer" and, along with the chronograph features, provided a huge amount of functionality to pilots.
The three-register version was adopted by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association as their official watch. This "806" model was launched onto the retail market in 1952 with the AOPA logo on the face and the name which has since become famous: Navitimer.
The Navitimer has been updated from manual to automatic, but apart from this the basic design has continued substantially unchanged for over 50 years.
The Navitimer today is bought not just by pilots but also by watch enthusiasts who appreciate technical quality and reliability. For collectors, of course, an original 1952 806 is a prize worth searching for.
