The Luminox watch company was founded in the early 1990s based on a technological innovation: a new form of nighttime lighting for watches. It's for this innovation that it's best known and the name "Luminox" is derived from the Latin words for "Light" and "Night".

Technology

The heart of the Luminox concept is the company's self-powered illumination system. This consists of micro gas lights made from borosilicate glass capsules. Unlike traditional luminous watches, Luminox watches don't need to "charge up" on external light. Nor do they need a button press to switch on the illumination. This means that they can be a good choice where the ability to read the time quickly, simply and reliably under a variety of conditions is a key requirement.

The micro gas lights are usually installed at the hour markers, in the hands and - in some models - also in the bezel.

Luminox claims that their system "glows 100 times brighter than other luminous watches".

History

The Luminox concept was originally created by the Richard Barry Marketing Group (RBMG), founded by Richard Timbo and Barry Cohen. The Luminox brand name was registered for the marketing of the new watches.

The big breakthrough for Luminox came when the US Navy expressed interest. The Navy SEAL teams required a reliable watch that could be read easily. In conjunction with RBMG the Luminox Navy SEAL dive watch was developed and launched in 1994.

The link with the US military was strengthened in 1999 when Luminox was contacted by the US Air Force. Bomber pilots reportedly found the Luminox watch excellent to wear on missions. However the "friendly rivalry" between the various arms of the forces meant that they would rather not wear a "Navy SEAL" watch. In response to this Luminox began developing the watches that led to the current U.S. Air Force Stealth Pilot Series.

Today you can buy many different Luminox watches. These often have model names that refer to the military connection, eg Night Ops, Dress Field and ST71 Blackbird.
