The Longines Watch Company

The Swiss watchmaker Longines is well-known for its company motto: Elegance is an Attitude. Its watches are said to have been the choice of celebrities as varied as Humphrey Bogart and Albert Einstein. Probably the best known Longines are the classic aviator watches such as the Lindberg Hour Angle.

History

Longines can trace its history back to the 19th century. In 1832 one Auguste Agassiz opened a small workshop in St. Imier. Agassiz's sister married Marc Francillon and it was Francillon who in 1866 built the original Longines factory. This was named after its location - the Longines fields near St. Immier.

In 1873 the company won a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of Vienna. The company went on to record ten Grands Prix and 28 Medaille's d'Or.

The famous Longines trademark - a winged hourglass - was registered with the Swiss Patents Office in 1889 and holds the record for the oldest registered watch company logo.

In 2001 the company celebrated the production of 30 million timepieces.

Longines is today part of the Swatch Group.
