The Ebel Watch Company

Ebel is one of the prestigious Swiss brands of luxury watchmaker. The company is a relatively new entrant to the market, having only begun life in the early twentieth century.

The company was formed in 1911 by Eugene Blum and his wife, Alice Levy. The name "EBEL" is an acronym derived from their names - and before you say "EBAL" I'll just say "Eugene Blum Et Levy"!

The company released their first wristwatch in 1912. Significant success came to the company just two years later. In 1914 their collection for the Swiss National Exhibition was awarded a gold medal. This brought them to the attention of other more established watchmakers and a large part of the Ebel business consisted of working with other watchmakers on "private labels" watches.

In 1971 the running of Ebel passed to Pierre-Alain Blum. He introduced new lines including the classic Sports collection and the Beluga collection. Pierre-Alain is also credited with creating the company's slogan: The Architects of Time.

People were eager to buy these new Ebel watches and turnover jumped. As the success of the company grew, Pierre-Alain bought an increasing share of the stock, becoming sole owner in 1975.

In 1986 Ebel bought the Villa Turque in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This wonderful building was built in 1917 by the famous Le Corbusier. It is still used by Ebel today as their Public Relations Center.

In 2005 supermodel Claudia Schiffer became the new "face" of Ebel in a marketing campaign photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. In 2006 a new campaign will launch where supermodel Gisele Bundchen will be featured.

Current Ebel collections available to buy include the Classic, Sportwave and 1911. Most are available in designs for both man and lady. The Ebel Beluga range for the lady is very popular and the Beluga name exudes luxury with its reference to expensive caviar. Exclusively for the man is the Ebellissimo . This is described as "uniting masculine elegance with sophistication and originality" and is crafted in pink gold and platinum.

In 2004 Ebel became part of the Movado group.
