Citizen Watches
The Citizen Watch Company is based in Japan and has been the world's largest watchmaker every year since 1986. The company is listed on the Tokyo stock exchange.History
The History of Citizen watches begins with the Shokosha Watch Research Institute which was founded in 1918. This produced its first watch, called the Citizen, in 1924 and the Citizen Watch Co. Limited was founded in 1930. Since then the company is estimated to have produced over 290 million watches. Citizen today operates in more than 13 countries with over 3000 employees.Citizen is known for its adoption of technology. Its range covers eveything from simple, classical styles to advanced technology for professionals such as aviators and divers.
In 2005 Citizen hit the headlines when it announced it would be producing "e-paper" timepieces. This involves an electronic paper display (EPD) created using E Ink imaging film. The result is thin, lightweight and flexible. The first Citizen "bendable clock" was demonstrated in December 2005.
Eco-Drive
Many of the Citizen watches you can buy today are equipped with Eco-Drive. This is a combination of technologies that make the watch more environmentally friendly by eliminating the need for batteries. EcoDrive is included in the stylish Calibre 3100 collection amongst others.Eco-drive watches use an advanced solar conversion panel and energy cell to drive the watch. A thin disc of amorphous silicon converts light to electricity and charges an energy cell in a highly efficient manner. Unlike some older solar watches, the Citizen Eco-drive can draw energy from any light source including office lighting.
Citizen claims that once fully charged the power reserve on some Eco-drive models is sufficient to allow them to run for up to four years, even in the dark!
