Breitling

The Swiss watchmaker Breitling is associated with precision instruments aimed at professionals. As such they are unashamedly functional, usually on the large side in order to best pack in a lot of functionality without loss of clarity. Breitling's reputation for highly reliable chronometers has made them the traditional choice for the airline industry and in particular the Breitling Navitimer is a highly collectible pilot's watch.

History

The Breitling story began in 1884 when Leon Breitling opened his chronograph workshop in St-Imiez in the Jura region of Switzerland. Following rapid expansion, the company relocated to La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1892.

In 1915, under the leadership of Leon's son Gaston, Breitling created the first wristwatch chronograph and went on to begin the tradition of supplying wrist instruments for airline pilots.

Gaston's son Willy took control of the family firm in 1932. The company's connections with aviation were strengthened further in 1936 when Breitling became official supplier to the Royal Air Force. 1942 saw the introduction of the Chronomat with its innovative circular slide-rule.

The famous Breitling Navitimer was introduced in 1952 and extended the circular slide-rule concept further. This feature packed chronograph uses the circular dial to provide a "navigation computer" for pilots.

For a watch maker associated with flying there can be no greater achievement than space travel, and in 1962 Scott Carpenter wore the Breitling Cosmonaute chronograph on the Aurora 7 space capsule.

Breitling has always been about precision and practicality. This is part of their appeal to professionals such as pilots. They have even introduced an Emergency range of watches which are capable of sending out a distress signal designed to be picked up by search aircraft.
