The Seth Thomas Clock CompanySeth Thomas is one of the most famous American clockmakers. It is also one of the oldest - they describe themselves as "America's Oldest Clockmaker". The company was founded almost 200 years ago in 1813 and is still going strong. It is one of the most respected US brands and has a reputation for both quality and prolificacy. Their clocks often bear the motto Tempus Fugit ("Time Flies") although it's important to note that this Latin expression is used by many clockmakers.
Many people collect antique Seth Thomas clocks, and many more buy new ones today.
HistorySeth Thomas was born in 1785 and went into the clockmaking trade early. In 1813 he bought out the Heman Clark clock business in Plymouth Hollow. It is from this date that the history of the Seth Thomas company is usually charted. The Seth Thomas Clock Company was incorporated in 1853.
Thomas died in 1859 and a few years later Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in his honour.
In the early days the Seth Thomas company specialised in longcase (grandfather) clocks. They also became involved in the production of public tower clocks including the one at New York's Grand Central Station.
In 2001 the company became part of the Colibri Group, a luxury goods brand. Today you can buy Seth Thomas clocks of all varieties, indoor and out, from wall to mantel and even cocktail table clocks.
AutosetA modern innovation of the Seth Thomas company is AUTOSET ™. This is a feature that allows a clock to keep the time accurate and automatically adjust for daylight saving time. It does this using an internal microchip rather than relying on an external radio signal.
