History
Seth Thomas was born in 1785 and went into the clockmaking trade early. In 1813 he bought out the Heman Clark clock business in Plymouth Hollow. It is from this date that the history of the Seth Thomas company is usually charted. The Seth Thomas Clock Company was incorporated in 1853.Thomas died in 1859 and a few years later Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in his honour.
In the early days the Seth Thomas company specialised in longcase (grandfather) clocks. They also became involved in the production of public tower clocks including the one at New York's Grand Central Station.
In 2001 the company became part of the Colibri Group, a luxury goods brand. Today you can buy Seth Thomas clocks of all varieties, indoor and out, from wall to mantel and even cocktail table clocks.
Autoset
A modern innovation of the Seth Thomas company is AUTOSET ™. This is a feature that allows a clock to keep the time accurate and automatically adjust for daylight saving time. It does this using an internal microchip rather than relying on an external radio signal.
