The Howard Miller Clock Company

History

Howard Miller is one of the best known American clock makers. The company began initially as an offshoot of the Herman Miller Furniture Company in Zeeland, Michigan. It became the Howard Miller Clock Company in 1937 when Howard took over from his father Herman.

The brand was initially known mainly for its wall and table clocks. Miller then expanded out into presentation cases. In the 1960s the company specialised in grandfather clocks and became known as the "World's Largest Grandfather Clock Manufacturer".

Products

Today you can buy Howard Miller clocks of all sorts, from floor to wall and mantel. Prices range from a few dollars to thousands of dollars. Although initially known as clocks for special occasions, Howard Miller timepieces are now more widely available.

For their high-end range, Howard Miller use movements produced by their associate company Kieninger of Germany. Kieninger is located in the Black Forest region - which is where the young Howard initially learned his trade.

So in a way the Howard Miller clock company has in a way gone full circle. To complete this "virtuous circle" they have expanded from clocks back into general furniture. The Howard Miller family today includes furniture makers Hekman and Woodmark.

One interesting feature on the Howard Miller website is a What's Your Clock Personality? quiz. When I took this it recommended the Vercelli - 615-004, a distinctly unconventional floor standing pendulum clock. I like it!
